MTN maintains best network status in Q2
MyBroadband Insights’ 2026 Mobile Network Quality Report for the second quarter of the year has found that telecommunications group MTN continues to have the best mobile network in South Africa, securing the top network quality score at 9.96.
The findings, are based on more than 350 000 speed tests conducted by mobile users, including a combination of crowdsourced data and dedicated drive tests of 20 000 km across South Africa’s major cities, towns and roads.
The outcomes revealed that MTN recorded the highest average download speed at 91.11 Mb/s, upload speed of 32.46 Mb/s and latency of 29 ms.
MTN was also the top-performing network in major metropolitans, including Tshwane, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, eThekwini, Nelson Mandela Bay and Mangaung.
Its strong performance is attributed to continued investment in infrastructure for both LTE and 5G networks.
Cell C took second place, with its 4G performance close to that of MTN.
The operator’s network quality score was 7.70, with a download speed of 65.76 Mb/s, upload speed of 32.48 Mb/s and latency of 41 ms.
Securing the third place – a drop from the first-quarter position of second place – was Vodacom, with a network quality score of 7.55, download speed of 71.13 Mb/s, upload speed of 17.27 Mb/s and latency of 31 ms, with its strong 5G performance offsetting its poor 4G performance.
In fourth position, Telkom recorded an overall score of 6.05, with a download speed of 52.56 Mb/s, upload speed of 12.14 Mb/s and latency of 30 ms.
Rain achieved a network quality score of 4.16, with download speeds of 22.27 Mb/s, upload speeds of 11.32 Mb/s and latency of 28 ms.
